NMC condemns killing of Shantanu Bhowmik

The Punjab and Haryana wing of National Media Confederation (NMC) has strongly condemned the killing of a young television journalist Santanu Bhowmik in Mandai area of Triprura. Coming only days after the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, this incident has again reminded of increasing violence against media-persons in our country.

Expressing the shock over the brutal murder of young television scribe, President of the NMC, (Pb& Chd chapter), Surinder Verma said, “This is an inhuman act to silence the voice of free press in the country and an assault on the freedom of press. Reporters on the field in far-flung areas are particularly vulnerable to such attacks. Ironically, no concrete steps have been taken by the Governments across the country to protect the members of the fourth estate”.

Adding to it, he said, “We demand that the state government should take prompt action and bring the guilty to book. We also demand that both state and central governments should take appropriate steps to safeguard the life of media professional across the country. Besides, we convey our heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family”.
